Tyson Gay: ‘I’ll be 100 percent’

“I’ll be 100 percent for the 100 meters and and the 4-by-1 relay.”

That’s what Tyson Gay said during a Sunday interview with NBC-TV’s Bob Neumeier. Gay, the world champion 100- and 200-meter sprinter from Lexington, suffered a “mild strain” of his left hamstring Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials.

He told Neumeier that he was worried about his leg before the race.

“I talked to Jon Drummond (his coach) about it and he told me if I feel anything, don’t run. But, of course, me being an athlete, sometimes I think I’m Superman at times. And I should have made the call, but I tried to run anyway and I have a mild hamstring pull.”

Before giving his “100 percent” assessment, Gay said “the treatments are going very well. They think I’m going to be back faster than normal. First, they said maybe two weeks off. But they’re thinking about (in) a week, week-and-a-half time I should be ready to go.”
