When Tyson Gay pulled up and tumbled to the track during Saturday’s 200-meter quarterfinals, the natural fear was a pulled hamstring.
Initial evaluation at the track, though, indicated a less-serious “severe cramp” of the left hammy.
Now, after an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) test, the diagnosis is a slight strain. That’s not as bad as the initial fear, but not as good as the first evaluation.
Gay’s mother, Daisy, said Tyson informed her of the results via text message. She said her understanding is that Tyson can resume light training in the next few days but will need to take a couple of weeks off from serious workouts.
Although eliminated from the 200, the reigning 100- and 200-meter champion out of Lexington’s Lafayette High School already earned a trip to the Beijing Olympics by winning the 100 meters here.

For me, the Olympics always call. Beijing 2008 marks my 10th Olympics as a writer and, no, I can’t get enough.
